Testers - out of work or not?

Following on from the thread of a couple of weeks ago - is the testing market slow? Anyone picked a contract up recently? Or are you on the bench?

I've been looking for 5 weeks; no success at all although the job boards look busy, but no interviews being offered.

Current gig's due to end pretty soon. Started sending my CV out yesterday and already getting calls that don't seem to be of the fishing variety, so I'm not so scared as I was a couple of weeks ago.

I'm not even applying and I'm getting 3 or 4 calls a week.

See my other thread. Deffo not fishing calls either - had another one this morning in fact.

Just placed two functional testers on 3 month gigs.

Yes, I've been getting calls - more in the last couple of weeks than at the beginning of September. The jobs sound genuine, client is named (some well-known names too), the CV goes in - then nothing.

The garden is looking tidier though!

Its easy to see some people are having to work away to get the roles. For instance there's no jobs in the NE for testers so the makem lad must be getting calls for jobs away from home.

Fortunately, Im being extended but I know it can be hard finding a new role. Generally in the north, expect to be out around 8 weeks. Further south, probably less time.

If you want 'many' calls about roles, make sure your cv and profile held by agents says available for work anywhere in the UK!

Then you'll get loads of calls but they wont all be where you really want to work.

Further to this I do encourage my resource team to call a candidate even if they are not residing within the commutable range of a role, as it is better to establish if a candidate does not want to travel rather than just ruling out a candidate out of hand.

Correct and the agents know I'll work anywhere for the right rate.

It's been 3 days since my CV went out again, I've got 4 possible (genuine) gigs in the pipeline.

                    Boomed!
