Previously I would have agreed with this. I had my CV up on Jobserve but only had a few 'unsolicited' calls. Most contact was in response to direct applications for advertised positions.
However, as I mentioned, i got the current gig via an unsolicited call after posting my CV on Monster. It wasn't an advertised position, its the best rate I've ever had even though its one grade lower than I normally work at.
I'd never have got this gig if I'd stuck to direct applications.
