    New business help

    Hi All,

Back in march i left my perminent job to start my own consultancy business.

i had a contract lined up with the NHS through an Agency and all was well... until the agency screwed up and it fell through.

since then i have applied for over 1000 positions and am not getting anywhere.

the pupose of my business is consultancy and service, so i could do contracting or create business from clients.

i want to contract at the moment to build a bit of capital but not getting anywhere.

my question is - does anyone know of anyone who is looking for an IT consultant or any IT requirement,s such as equipment, networks and so on?

the companies web address is www.miragetechnology.co.uk

any help would be appreciated, being out of work for nearly 3 months witha family to support is taking its toll.

    Harsh, but well-meaning advice -

Go back to being a permie for the time being - the market doesn't look good for new entrants at the moment.

Failling that, you must have some feedback from 1000 applications. Look for trends in what they are saying and act on it.

    oh, and fix

so it doesn't run over the edge of your placeholders (in firefox).

Agree with what Moscow said. 1000 applications is far far too many and indicates the problem lies in the process you are following. What has been the general feedback? There are likely issues with your cv, your rate and your skills. Can you address those? Otherwise it sounds like back to permie would best until you can.

      Good luck.

Maybe you need to review your rates. Might be too high for the current market.

Firstly fix the bit MM so kindly pointed out on your site. Secondly, I'm agog at the 1000 applications, you need to look at them and correlate where you're going wrong.

Indeed it is a difficult time out there at the moment for new entrants and as you say you have a family to support. Prioritise.

What kind of responses have you been getting?

How much thought did you give to the naming of your company? IMO - Mirage Technology conjures up images of seeing something that's not actually there.

I havent had any feedback from any of the agencies, they put me forward and never get back to me. my rate is average for my market.

the website is being redesigned, as the company is new i wanted to jsut get some info online.

i put alot of though int my company name also..

in all fairness would you honestly look for a computer consultancy firm and think " oh they arn't actually there".. dont get me wrong i appreciate constructive comments, but saying something about my company name like that isnt constructive.

If you made a 1000 applications and got nothing did you not think to ask why?

For most of us that apply for roles through agents websites and company names are completely irrelevant. In fact, if they could be bothered to look it might well put them off: you look like an expensive consultancy, not a contractor.

You probably need to go rewrite your c.v. (trying to use proper capital letters and spelling). Lots of support people about: what makes you different from the herd?

1000 applications since March is nearly 20 per day. Unless you've got a team of 10 people making those applications, the quality's bound to suffer. I'd say play to your strength, find a unique selling point and press that. Contracting is more about the sniper rifle than the sawn-off shotgun.
