Do people have to keep petrol receipts for mileage claims or just note down the travelling?

I keep fuel receipts just in case to show that I've purchased the fuel to drive the miles claimed.

Not for tax releif on mileage AFAIK but never hurts to keep any extra proofs. Not actually done it myself as always ran a company van but I think you can claim VAT on mileage for your own car and you do need to keep receipts for that.
