I am 3 weeks away from the end of my contract... not sure of extension..

What is the right time to start the search... Is it fine to ask client abt extension directly now?

I'd wait a bit longer to see if they're forthcoming; be subtle, bearing in mind that they might need a reminder that you're finishing soon.

You're as busy as you make it. At the end of my contracts I'm always busy looking for the next one.

My CV goes out 4 weeks before end of any contract, whether I expect extention or not. There is always something better out there and another offer puts you in a strong bargaining position. If you want an extention at the current client then ask now as well.

Being immediately available is a big advantage. Sometimes you find a really desperate 'start next day' client and can rack up your rate. However don't let that stop you from preparing well in advance. Sorting it early is the prescription I use to prevent or reduce expensive bench time.
