Contracting in Mons, Belgium - Accommodation

Starting a new job in Mons, Belgium on the 21st April.

Having a difficult time finding temporary accommodation.
The contract is for 6 months (probably longer), so I wanted to get a B&B for the first two weeks whilst looking for something more permanent. B&B should be around the €50 per night range, preferably with wi/fi.

Hunting on the net. Long-term leases seem to be the norm and fully furnished accommodation isn't common. Again, if anyone familiar with the area can suggest somewhere it would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

You are 50kms outside Brussels. I know some guys who worked in various Belgian town and found the best thing to do was lease a place in Brussels and drive in.

      Think Mons, then think this

Basically, you're between a rock and a hard place. Mons is a dreadful place (think Slough, but with language and attitude) in the middle of no where, 70km from Brussels. Apart from Brussels and Antwerp which have expat communities, elsewhere in Belgium is decidedly boring for a non-local. To avoid being a Billy No-Mates you really need to speak French and or Flemish to effectively integrate. Best bet for you then, is to do 4 nights in hotel near your work place and come back to Blighty for weekends. Leave at lunch time Friday, take the tunnel, you can drive back to London in 4 hrs. On Mondays arrive at lunch time. Make the hours up during the week as there is nothing to do apart from work.

If you opt to live and drive in Brussels, be warned. it becomes a big car park during rush hour and take extra life insurance. One of this boards main contributers died last year on the Brussels roads.

Sorry for being so negative, about the place. At least you won't be expecting much, and it is the work that is important. Thinking about the $$$ should help get you through the contract. Trust it's a good rate.

            Pm

            can I PM?

I'm new to the forum. They still have me under moderation. Where is the PM link?

ps. The idea of speaking Flemish in Mons made me smile. It doesnt work with the walloonies. Also, to commute from Brussels isnt a good idea. I know some that do it. Not recomended.

Mons isnt fantastic - but I guess you are coming down to earn.
