When Reference details should be given..????

    Guys,

Been in this dilemma many times....!! At what stage after applying for a job (through pimps) previous/current employer’s (reference) details should be given...???

I have seen many times first thing pimps want is reference details (with Mobile & email ID.!!) of employers...Also many times got complaints from previous manager’s abt pimp’s marketing calls...!!!!Now a days many pimps are not at all taking any CV further with out detailed reference details.

So what stage of application reference details should be given...???

    1) Along with CV..??

    2) After first call from pimp..??

    3) After arranging interview..??

    4) After attending interview..??

I was thinking abt (4) as if you are technically good then only reference matters…But if pimps insisting on getting reference at the beginning, how can we avoid giving them details knowing that pimps might mis-use the contact details for their “marketing”..?? Some pimps refuses to go ahead if reference is not provided at the beginning….!!

    So whats the solution…??????

When I have a firm offer with some sight of the contract is when I'd do it - maybe. Although only as a good will gesture really due to how quick the start dates are.

How many clients really go back and request your references anyway? If you're tulip they're going to find out soon enough.

      Appropriate times to give references:

      5. When hell freezes over.
      6. When pigs fly.
      7. On the twelth of never.
      8. When Great Birnam Wood comes to High Dunsinane.

I.e. don't. If they really persist, say you'll give them to the client and the client only.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

These pimps do not have a job for you. They are teasing you with false hope. They are just want leads and if you give them this is what happens:
        • Your managers will hate you, because of all the agents calling them.
        • Agents will call your manager, when your renewal is due and offer to replace you with better, cheaper resources.
        • If you tell them where your CV has been sent (and worse, your rate!)they will put up cheaper candidates against you.

Believe me, this does happen. NEVER GIVE REFERENCES TO A PIMP. If they really insist, just say you will give to client at interview. In 10 years of contracting a client has never asked me for references.

Depends on the industry. In banking they will normally expect some references so they can do a bit of background checking, banks are quite anal because of the potential cost of screw ups. I have never had to provide references for anything outside the banking sector though.

If anyone's stuck for references, I can supply them at £25 a page. I'll even supply a (premium rate) phone number the pimps can contact me on.

Just say they can speak to your mum for a character reference.
"He's such a lovely boy, always does his homework, is slowly getting off the skag" etc..

To the client at the interview or any time after.

To the agent when they make an offer or after.

I have a few references that I give out if they are really persistent - a vice president at Oracle, another contractor mate of mine, and last permie manager. None are hiring, have no prospect of hiring contractors, but don't mind giving a decent reference.

That said, I tend to do it as late in the process as possible.
