Anyway - I went to an interview the other day for a 6 month contract. I began to have doubts about the agencey because they were soooooo friendly and over-sold the position to me.

I go to the interview, it went well, I get a call from the agencey:

"Hi, they really like you and think you would fit in perfectly, in fact, they would like to offer you a permenant position. Thing is, about the contract position, there's 2 of you in the running but you could go for the permie position anyway - have a think about it over the weekend"

I ring them back a few days later:

"Not interested in the permie role, let me know about the contract though"

"OK - We'll get back to you"

And that's the last I hear from them.

Now - it seems to me that there never was a contract and they were just hoping I would go for the permie role.

Is this the type of thing agencies always try? Isn't there any sort of rule that stops them doing this?

It cost me a days wages to go to the interview...
Thanks for the tip. If it happens to me I'll respond

"I'm very tempted by the permie offer, but I'm not sure. How about we do six months on contract terms..."
Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!

Yes - I'd already noticed the similarity.

Don't get me started on estate agents...

How these people sleep at night I'll never know.

Could you not suss out in the interview whether they wanted a permie or contract - if it was permie they would have told you about benefits [ pension etc ] ???

              Didn't you ask FFS ??

                Calm Down Dear.

Off course OP didn't ask. They have now learnt a lesson.

I'm sorry, but if you can't determine from an interview whether the post is permie or contract, and you don't ask - what the hell are you doing there in the first place ?

I don't think I've ever asked at an interview "is this for a permie job or for a contract position?", to be fair.

Plus, it may be that this was an interview for a contract role, OP didn't get it, and agent can't be bothered to waste time telling them. It's happened to me where the agency has suddenly disappeared (although never after an interview, only before).

No but you should be able to deduce from the interview whether it is or not - or at least have some suspicion that it's not what you thought it was.

An agency once sent me on an interview where they had claimed "there was no travel involved" - I'd worked out within 5 minutes that there might be - so I asked the question, and promptly terminated the interview.

The client was apologetic for wasting my time and we both slagged the agency off.
