First Contract - Extension

I have been getting my head down since starting. I was offered a 6 month extension today, and of course that makes me happy. What are some things that I need to consider before signing the dotted line? I enjoy working here and I am loving life at the moment. I was considering increasing my rates in January. Is this the perfect opportunity? Anything else I am missing?

Renewal is always a good time to look at what you've done so far, compare it to the original job spec and build a good case for asking for a rate increase. In some cases you will need to justify why you deserve more money. You also need to think about what you'll do if the increase is refused - will you walk or stay on?

Before I was offered the extension, I had already begun planning my strategy for a rate increase. I was happy with the rate when I first started, getting my foot in the door. But, I suppose you catch wind of what the agent is making out of you and think, "sod this, I want more money!"

I am producing some great results and enjoy the work.

I would be prepared to walk.

Plus the agent has had no part in the renewal; it's all your work. That's what always annoys me.

The other thing is that a renewal is the perfect time for a week off (so I've heard). See if you can get your extension to start and end 1 week later.

I am not unhappy with my rate, but putting my rates up in 2008 would not be out of order.
