    AAArrggh what to do...

After weeks of nothing, and first contract coming to an end, everything becomes hectic!

Yesterday i get a call. an interview i had 3 wks ago, that disappeared due to client wanting it located in 250miles away 5days a week, now wants me for a new project located 30miles away. they have even sent the contract over to me and offered a good rate with the usual 3mth at a time stint.

however, while all this was going on, i was approached by someone who was interested in me working for them, although he was pushing for perm. the original perm offer was £5k below what i would even look to consider, but now i've told them i'm off elsewhere they have increased the offer.

The perm gig + package is worth about £x, but as we all know, contracting allows more expenses + higher rate = more dosh. i've told him that since the contract is on the table and money is my current driver (baby due, house to convert, mortgage to pay etc), that i do not want to go perm. i would however consider a contract. he instantly said they can do that, however it would be £25 a day less, but the contract would be for the term of the project which is 12mths, and it would be only 15miles away...

What do i do? i have verbally accepted the first offer, but signed no contract. the first project is also likely to extend and probably last for 12mths. where do i stand?

Sorry chaps, this is only my second contract and am a newbie... Advice would be much appreciated.
I didn't say it was your ******* fault, I said I was blaming you!

I had a similar situation last year. The one I accepted verbally took a while to get the contract out, plus there were some issues with two agencies involved, so I simply called the verbally-agreed agent and said that another better contract had come through and I still hadn't received the paperwork for his, so I was going for the 'bird in the hand' as it were.

I do always tell agents that I have several irons in the fire though, so they don't think they are my only hope and also that they won't be surprised if I get a contract with someone else.

It's a fast moving market and I'm guessing you're not the only one who can do what you do. Accept the one you want, tell the other agent nicely and move on. They will appreciate you keeping them informed.

the wife has just told me that under no circumstance am i going perm just yet! i have to pay everything off first!

TBH, perm doesnt interest me! i'm enjoying the lack of politics. at least i get paid for what i do now...

i've never heard of the company that the guy who is chasing and trying to talk me round to him works for. that is worrying. the website is a holding page. they are supposed to be an IT services co that have been around for 15yrs or so under different names. they basically take people (contract or perm) and stick them in with clients. that worries me...

Sounds like a consultancy role..so worst of both worlds...paid as a permi, but treated like a contractor.

But... BUT you might get to take a company mobile and Laptop home with you!! And you get to work on exciting projects with a motivated team....

              I hate big consultancies.

You don't always get a phone - you were lucky! When Oracle gave me a company mobile, my manager said "it's to make your job easier". I had to point out "No, it's to make your job easier."

All the best projects are through big consultancies - where else can you get to work in such exotic locations as Bracknell, Basingstoke, Hull or Slough?

Get a piece of paper, put all offers across the top and divide the page in half: pro’s and cons.

Ie pro’s 12 month contract, close to home, baby in the way so time to see him/her.
Con £25 less than you have else where

At the end of this you should have a clearer picture of where you want to be. Oh and nothing signed nothing accepted.
