    what am i worth

The title alone leave me open for plenty of abuse but what the hell.

I posted a while ago about going contracting and held back the last two weeks. I have been in touch with the Agencys and they said that they reckon i should aim for a rate of 500 - 550 (currently on permie job paying 65k)

I am a J2EE engineer with, just shy on, 6 years experience developing and deploying many web applications.

I have 5 years working in Financial company not front office or trading.

I have current skills, Spring 2, Hibernate, Spring MVC, Spring WebFlow.

Is it a dotted line or a straight solid line? Is it in high denomination coins? Or fivers?

You're worth as much as your next gig!
And as much as the market thinks you're worth.
I don't know much about java, as I pimp myself as a .NET Specialist, so I'm a dime a dozen crack whore equivalent.
              I would estimate J2EE around the £450 - 650 mark

Rates are very varied so you just have to try yourself out. I've seen rates for my kind of role from £200 a day to £800 a day. It depends on so many factors including the availability and location of competing contractors and the desperation of the client and, not least, the greed of the EB.

No point deliberating about it on here though. The only test is to put out your details to the EB's and see if you get any takers. They'll tell you soon enough what they're willing to pay.

If you're on £65k then you need to be looking at 520+ a day to break even really.

Not sure what you're worth, but that's where you need to be looking.
