    Day Free Trial

    I had a telephone interview today, Aced the questions. Got on well with the guy asking the question all is good. 20 minutes later I get the pimp on the phone telling me the company in question that they would like to go ahead, but would like a day trial free of charge? Of course I said NO! I'm a strictly "pay by day" kind of guy. The Pimp wouldn't relent saying this is now a "standard practice" that is now in place, I said I don't frankly care, I don't implement the "Standard Practices" and said they pay for the day or they don't see my mush.

    I was wondering if any of you guys have had this "Standard Practice" requested?

    No it's not standard practice.

    But I'd probably do the free day and adjust the overall rate accordingly. A kind of "if you don't like me you don't pay, but if you do you do" deal

      No chance...don't do it...

      Would you get a builder to spend a day building stuff for you free of charge to prove himself?

      Its about principles...set YOUR standard practice and stick to it...

      I got through 2 interviews for a Permie directorship at a large corporate once and then they told me that I was down to a shortlist of 4 but the final stage was an assessment day...at that point I told them where to go. They had come to me, not the other way around and they wanted me to jump through hoops for them...I left assessment days behind 10 years ago, ain't gonna do them now! As it happens, every previous assessment day I'd done I had got the job and I really did want this directorship (at the time I was in the clouds that permie's live in) so in some ways I cut off my nose to spite my face...but they were my basic principles and I was true to them.

      Suggest you do the same...you don't agree with this approach so don't do it...and if you lose the gig, then just go get another one.

        Is this agency one of those that charges the client a 'search & interview arrangement fee' - if so, they really are taking the p1ss big time.

        I agree. Don't do 'free trial' day - what on earth can they glean in a day? Permies don't get the treatment, nor should you.

              I've been asked to do it once or twice and declined. It's my guess the agent promised the freebie trial to win the business from the client. Thinking about it you could reverse the situation, I reckon you can tell within an hour if you have landed a bad contract, it would be nice to say 'sorry client you have failed the trial' !

                Why no suggest that you'll do the days work, but only charge if the client doesn't want you ?

                  Yeah not a bad idea. But TBH I would be loathe to work for an agency and/or company that utilises this kind of employment method. They should have a recruitment proceedure in place that ensures they employ a good candidate and shouldnt have to rely on taking someone on for a free trial. But if it comes down to it and you really want the job, do it. If I really wanted a job and it was good money I'd wear a pink tiara if it meant I got it.

                    Think about your terminology.

                    You are a Ltd Co - not a permie employee.

                    Employment method = Vendor Selection
                    Recruitmrent = Vendor Selection
                    Employ = Enter into Service Contract with
                    Job = Contract
