Last year I had a call out the blue from a company in Dubai and the next day I was on a plane for a 9 month contract...they needed someone to start immediatly, I needed the work...a good fit.

If you don't need the gig then turn it down...if you do then make it happen...its not up the agency to be reasonable, they have a position to fill and if you don't fill it then someone else will.

Same with rate...I accepted a reduced rate because I needed the work, but at the same time would only agree to a 2 month contract...in that time I made myself indespensible and when it came to extending I upped my rate to sufficiently above my normal rate to cover the two months I'd been working for less.

Italy...summer...girls...go for it...

Thanks Vito, in saying that dropping the rate wouldn't be out of the question as accomodation and monthly return flights are paid, however I am in the middle of a planning and training role currently and couldn't just walk out - if I was to return to the UK it would rule me out of working for the client again, and they are a good un.....

Fair enough...ethically the right decision as well...

If I were you I would tell the agent that the rate is not good enough but thank them for the opportunity...they will then spend a few days getting your rate authorised (its all brinkmanship) and then come back to you with the rate you want...thats a week gone...then ask for a couple of days to think about whilst indicating that you are really keen...which you drag into a week...so that then is two weeks gone...then tell them its all systems go but you need 3 weeks to finish what you're doing which is pretty reasonable and hey presto, you got the gig when you want it and at the rate you want.

It might not work out of course, but its got to be worth a try...

well that's the stage we are at - they are trying to decide wheter my rate is too much for what they are proposing (its not because its only slightly more than I am on now)

I honestly don't think that there is someone else who could potentially do this role at such short notice and for less than I have proposed - but hey if there is, good luck to 'em

In Permiedom, HR can tell you what "the rate for the job" is. In contracting, the agent may say what he likes, but only money talks. The contract is worth what they'll pay for it.

I appreciate that Euro,

It's a contract that I would like - obviously on my terms though. I would like to think that the strength in my CV would see them come back and try and negotiate on the rate - £100 a day is a hell of a difference......

The one thing I suppose I have no control over is whether they send my CV onto the client.

I had a telephone interview on a friday and Started a Contract in Ireland on a Monday. As I see it it, as Long as I get the Contract Emailed/Letter of Intent, I pack bags and go, obviously once I get the rate I want. I'd never leave it for 5 weeks. My Wife would kill if i let an oppurtunity in Italy go a miss!!
