Speaking for myself, pay-free holidays and sick leave is an issue that is in the way of building any rapid savings. People for whom taking time off isn't relevant won't have that issue. The extra money is nice, but I'm in a contract; how long could I afford not to contract in the meantime is a real question for me since I'm not building that war chest yet.

whenever i get asked if i want to go permie i quote minimum of 6 figures please and head of the world title plus 50 days holiday and huge bonus.That normally gets rid of them but once or twice they called my bluff and i pop along for an interview to see if anyone will actually offer me this. no joy yet

As mentioned I understand money will never be as good. The main positives for staying here are : money should be decent, I like the place. And the main thing - I'm home for 5ish every night to spend time with the kids

If I continue to keep contracting I'd be worried if have to be a weekend dad and don't really do that when they are so young

I dont see much rates higher up North over £350 doing what I do ( u see the odd 375-400).

Salary wise this was about 85-90k last year

That's interesting. 85 - 90k for what I do, in London, is not very easy to come by. And I'm a £500 p/d contractor.

£350 is not a high rate. I don't understand the people saying 65k+

Rate depends on where you are in the country and demand for your skills.

Who else is finding all of that a bit hard to achieve?
