Just wanted to ask if "mistakenly" having your cv put forward by 2 separate agencies is a major mistake to make, or is it no big deal (for the client). It's very difficult to tell that this is happening particularly when agencies are keeping the company names very close to their chests. I'm lucky if I actually get to hear the company name before having my cv put forward for another generic "well known blue chip company". Is it any wonder?! I had an agency sort-of trying to blame me for a company seeing my cv twice when if they'd told me who the company were I would have never instructed the forwarding in the second place! Plus these so-called quoted reference numbers seem pretty arbitrary and not the globally unique id system that is needed to avoid duplication amongst agencies.

Make sure you always follow this rule.
1. Always give out a least five references up front. Best to have top IT directors on your list and give out their mobile and home phone numbers to any agency that calls you. Do this up front.
2. When an agency calls you (cold) always tell them any interviews you have been to or are about to go to. Make sure you give them the phone of the contact at the client that is hiring. This will improve your chances of getting the contract.
3. Let the agencies send your CV out by giving them express permission to do so. It is also useful if you something like "and you can edit it change it if you like".
4. The best agencies (i.e. the ones that give the contractor the best service) have at least a 34% margin on your rate. Don't settle for less otherwise the service you recieve will suffer.
5. Spread these top tips. If everyone used my patented tried and tested tactics, we'd all get along with agencies much better.

If you really want to see something funny, watch a hiring manager try to hire somebody who has two agents representing them.
The back stabbing, "exclusive deals", etc. are quite amusing.
Don't think for one second that either agent would back down.Comment

I may have read you out of context on this so I'm sorry if I have but are you really suggesting contractors accept a 34% margin as a minimum? I have contracted for a fair time and have never 'paid' more than 12% and I still get paid weekly and I still get renewals. What other 'good service' would you expect for the additional percentage from an agency? I'm not anti-agency, don't get me wrong but I will negotiate very hard to protect my own margins and I believe we all should, very hard indeed.! Right now some agencies are charging quite unbelievable margins for very little value-added.
