Sounds plausible, but could also be an attempt to influence proceedings tomorrow (i.e., rebels will know they have only a few days left as MPs; but most of them don't care and many have already announced that they're standing down).
A General Election. Goodie! That will solve everything!

Most will still vote Tory/Labour and it will be hung parliament as LibDem/Brexit will split the vote. Most Tory/Labour candidates do not believe in Brexit.

Brexit - the gift that just keeps on giving.....

      Only in the UK.
Abroad it's a buffoonish, slapstick comedy.
"Whatever will they do next" is the overriding emotion, followed by "How they've fallen".
      Hard Brexit now!

Armando Iannucci’s been working overtime to bring us this one, all the storyline threads are heading towards the cliffhanger season finale. Hopefully it won’t go all “Lost” on us.

Making it clear outside No 10 that he won't personally ask for a delay under any circumstances, i.e., you'll have to change the gov't. Unless the rebels back down (unlikely), it looks like an election is coming, probably for mid-Oct.

Yup looks that way ...it's just not going to help though, if parliament is hung again I suppose it all depends "how" its hung.

Dunno about that. Hilary Ben’s looking to kick the can down the road to 31 Jan 2020.

Though Gove did indicate over the weekend that the Government won’t necessarily follow any law laid down by Parliament....

Exactly. Hence the deselection threats. That statement was mainly to get on the right side of Brenda from Bristol when it's "forced" upon him.

Innumerable ways in which it could go pear shaped, such as the newly deselected Gaukeward squad deciding to stand as "conservative independents" and Farage not playing ball when there's no commitment to ditch the WA altogether.

Another hung parliament seems the most likely outcome.

The draft bill says 31 Jan 2020 or any date they otherwise suggest (15th of infinity? ), subject to ultimate parliamentary approval. They won't go past the next EU budget round. Might not get an extension at all, although probably more likely than not.

Point is this: Johnson will refuse to ask for an extension, breaking the law if required, but will offer an early election so it doesn't come to that. There's always the opportunity for an alternative gov't to be formed too. Anyway, it will be very hard for Labour to refuse an election, providing it happens before any extension is needed or after the alternative gov't has secured one.

Gvt Source - Boris Johnson does not want an election *but* will tomorrow table a motion under the fixed term parliaments act which will be triggered if the rebels win the vote, starting a process towards a potential general election

Still wouldn't rule out some last minute pettifogging. They have Nikki da Costa in No 10, and she knows her stuff.

This is an interesting read for example:

Proponents of the new Bill to stop No Deal face a significant dilemma over Queen's Consent | LSE BREXIT

By contrast, if Corbyn-Hammond were to go further than Cooper-Letwin and mandate that the PM must not only seek but also agree or accept any extension, by whatever mechanism, there can be little doubt that Queen’s Consent would be needed and the government would have to agree to the Bill being passed during Third Reading.
                      Who knows...
