Whether it is a good idea or not, its the only achievable way for the UK to leave.
Would it be such a disaster? Many times disasters have been predicted and they have not cone true.
As Mike Rutherford from Genesis remarked over people leaving Genesis, at the time they all thought it would be disastrous. But actually it worked out well.
Or to pick another example, Mervyn King writing to the times along with 363 other so called experts to deride the 1981 budget. It worked out quite well....
