It isn't just about Brexit. The Chinese are getting pretty uppity and pushy, and claim to have hypersonic cruise missiles and all kinds of gizmos the West can't counter.

Then there's Iran and North Korea, among others. So there's every chance that sooner or later everything will go tits up or, in prepper jargon, the SHTF!

Maybe we shouldn't have sent those warships to the South China sea...

But after the Starfish Prime test in the early 1960s, streetlights were knocked out in Hawaii a thousand miles away!

Also, since those early days of crude devices, the type and even direction of energy released by a nuke can be tailored. So a deliberately gamma-enhanced high-altitude blast would cause a far larger EMP.
