I think our resident alcoholic friend had a little posting flurry after another groundhog day in the saloon bar.

        Let us start with...

"Let's say there's a hard Brexit and all the Japanese companies leave (they have said several times they can't afford to operate in the UK in that event - and their PM has confirmed with May that is the case) , then what happens if and when the factories close?"

Have all Japanese companies said they would "leave"?

Shurely you can point me to some evidence backing up your claim that "all Japanese companies are leaving". If "they" have said it several times it should not be hard to find.

Maybe one or two will keep a small assembly line for the UK market.
It was JAMA who put out a joint statement. And the Japanese government. Unlike here the Japanese government and their big companies are highly coordinated.
But you don't need to get a statement from them, work out the profit margin on a mid range car and figure out what 10% tariffs would do.

So we manufacturer about 1.7 million cars a year. We register about 2.7 million new cars a year.

The car manufacturers are concerned about having to build more cars here. What with our high wages and full employment.

You seem unable to grasp that if trade becomes more restrictive it will lead to a greater demand for UK car manufacturing.
