It's a national myth designed to make working class idiots like Shauny and Zig (aka Churchy) sign up as cannon fodder.
And it works a treat.
The British forelock-tugging underclass will follow their supposed betters over a cliff if ncessary - why else have they consistently voted against their own interests for centuries - the latest example of which is Brexit?
It's a bit like the US's national myth that they're the most free country in the world when in reality the economic situation for most of their citizens means there's a huge serf class who are lucky if they have 2 weeks off in a year.
