Done.. For the beginning I've just been topping up £10 (clearly not the most effective long-term) and so I'm just entering entering an expense for each top-up and attaching a screenshot of my Oyster journey/top-up history
.. ALl through my accountants app.
Hopefully that should be fine.Comment

Absolutely. Tax tail and business dog. In my experience having had some fairly interesting conversations with HMIT over the years in my own personal investigations he couldn't really give a flying fig. He might just say "Oyster tops u, total 500 quid". "Yeah, I just expense the top ups because it is so much easier", that is likely to be the end of it.
If it isn't it's the least of the worries; you are already so far up the creek with no boat if he says "show me all the journeys then".
Take a view, don't sweat the small stuff. HMIT won't. He's bright enough to understand your patterns and picture.Comment

Mine? No I am saying just claim the top ups. If it looks reasonable then in the event an inspection the taxman is not going to get excited.Originally posted by zudecke View PostI don't understand your response? Are you saying I should not claim my oyster top ups?Comment

Hmm, if nobody else bothers claiming individual journeys I might just get a separate business oyster and start having it auto topup from the business account. I'll still keep the journey logs to show it's exclusively business trips but it does seem like far less faff.Comment

I only ever go into London for business purposes, so claim all Oyster through business. Leisure is not an option in The Smoke.I was an IPSE Consultative Council Member, until the BoD abolished it. I am not an IPSE Member, since they have no longer have any relevance to me, as an IT Contractor. Read my lips...I recommend QDOS for ALL your Insurance requirements (Contact me for a referral code).Comment

I make the same journey 3 times a week as I drive Monday and Friday, the only deviation I make is when I go to the London Test Gathering again for work but someone said earlier it's hardly anything Hector would get excited about if a mistake was made.In Scooter we trust

I thought travel could be paid for "by the Director personally" i.e. from personal accounts? If I'm ONLY using THIS particular Oyster card for business travel, why would I need to bother linking it to my biz account?
Sorry, excuse the ignorance - It's all new to me!Comment

The HMRC manual goes into some more detail if you really want to make sure you're doing things by the book.
EIM16068 - Vouchers and credit tokens: transport vouchers: travel cards: Oyster cards
In short, if the cost of the topups doesn't exceed the cost of the business journeys, then there is no taxable benefit.
It may still need reporting on a p11d though, unless you have a dispensation.Last edited by TheCyclingProgrammer; 21 March 2014, 10:11.Comment
