      Agreed. I'll speak with him tonight and make sure he gets some proper advice. I appreciate your input, and it really was just general guidance I was looking for - I'm certainly not the type to take advice given on the internet as gospel (the FiL is a different matter mind )

        WES with bells on it.

        Paying up to 1K now with a bit of hassle is cheaper than paying 5K+ later with a lot of hassle.

          You need specialist advice from a Employment lawyer or CIPD qualified HR person. Plenty of em around to advise on this type of thing. Can put you in touch with some reasonable price HR types if needed.
