Donation to software provider

I had a google and i dont think this has been asked before, but can i make a donation to a provider of a software package through my limited company and claim it as a legitimate expense?

I the piece of software is an open source time-management suite which i have found imporoves my productivity and its use is solely for business purposes

My co has made charitable donations in lieu of payment to developers before, so I don't see why not.

It would only be allowable as a charity donation if it was a registered charity. If not, I don't see why it can't be a software cost. Ask the developer for an acknowledgement of the payment for your records.

When i have done something similar before, i have received an automated email confirming my donation. Would this be sufficient?

How much are we talking about? If it's £10 why are you even asking the question, if it's hundreds or more, of course you will need some kind of evidence of purchase.

If you cannot get a receipt, stick a voucher detailing the donation into your accounts. Vouchers are ok as evidence as long as your accounts don't consiste entirely of £199k voucher 'purchases' with no other evidence lol. They are entirely acceptable on the odd occasion where you have a retail purchase, lose the receipt and cannot/it's not practical to obtain another.

Some Open source ppl rely entirely on donations and in their country of origin may or may not account for such revenue hence do not provide receipts.
