    New Tax Code

    Hi,

I have just recieved a P6 notice from HMRC stating my new tax code for this year as 251L.

Has anybody any idea why it would be so low, i take it means i earn £2,500 is pounds before I pay any tax, i am sure basic rate is around £7000.

    Any help would be good.

PS: I do my own PAYE

    Regards.

Did you declare anything on your P11 that would make them want to reduce it?

Have you opted to pay your self assessment via a change in your tax code?

    Any company cars or similar?

Always worth phoning HMRC to ask as they will tell you why they its set the way it is.

Basically they think you've got £1110 of benefit from somewhere so are reducing your tax code by 555 ish to compensate.

There should normally be notes in the explanation box. Probably either collecting unpaid tax through tax code or reductions due to benefits.

Or just wrong - not uncommon.

        Why not ask your Accountant?

        Hi,

If you use an Accountant ask them. If they've submitted a P11 (mentioned above) for you they'll have the details.

Without any adjustments the normal tax code is 810L.

Otherwise give HMRC a call (but that could be painful!)

If there is no explanation with the coding notice give HMR&C a call - they have been know to make the odd error, occasionally.

I have to agree with what has been said so far if you have no explanation give HMRC a call and they should be able to explain it to you
