Multiple annual accounts submissions by two accountants

    Hello Guys,

    Need some suggestion :

I have been with Accountant A for sometime ..in the year end...who prepared my annual accounts ( not submitted yet ) .
I have moved to Accountant B who prepared another set of my annual accounts and I went ahead with Accountant B's submission in the month of Feb 2012.. though the are no more associated with my company... due to human error.. Accountant A team also submitted my accounts on 30th of March 2012 . Now I received a letter from HMRC stating that I owe them lot more than what I have submitted. HMRC recommeded to resubmit again.

Since there is difference ( less) in the figures submitted by the accountant B , will there be any investigations initiated by HMRC... will there be any knock-on affect with my accounts submission.

    Regards
    Murali

Out of interest what do you think ?

You give no indication of the size of the difference and why it has arisen (there could be any number of reasons) but if I had received 2 different versions of a key document I might just seek an indication of why it was different.

The problem you will likely have is the current accountant will have to figure out why the previous accountants filing was different,

Are the expenses valid? If so, then you just need to submit the correct accounts to HMRC. It may well be a red flag for them to question you further, in which case you need to be ready to explain what happened and the reasons for the differences.

If it's £3,000 in expenses then presumably HMRC just want the difference in CT, which would be £600?

What were they? If they were incurred expenses through vouchers etc then Accountant A forgetting them smacks of a problem with their systems to me.

If they are perhaps a little creative then this may be an issue. e.g. 3k for use of home as an office could easily be a problem. Retrospective charge backs for mileage that you had forgotten would be OK (subject to milage log etc showing journeys). Train fares, this sort of thing.

Perhaps you just forgot to give them to the original accountant and the second was more thorough.

Equally I've seen capital allowance be forgotten to be claimed.

In any event I would expect an enquiry, however provided your accountant is able to demonstrate the reason for the foul up by the original accountant it shouldn't be a problem. But as a general principle these sorts of things (like late forms etc) do attract HMRC attention.
