Not bad advice but taking points 1, 2 and 4 you could decide Upton's was a good choice.....

What to expect from an accountant ?

I would say both.
You should always ask questions of your accountant, challenge them on certain rulings. Equally though, and when the opportunity arises, your accountant should provide proactive advice, so via newsletters, email exchanges, when VAT returns and end of year accounts are produced, it should very much be a 50:50 relationship.
Remember though you are the director and therefore the responsibility is yours, not the accountants.
proactive , sjd. Not for me you weren't . Reactive was a big ask sometimes.... total sales talk from my experience..Comment

We try hard to provide a personal friendly proactive service, which is why we offer meetings, not just an online or telephone only service, it’s not mandatory to see your accountant but is nice to know you can if you ever need to.
We give all clients their own dedicated accountant rather than operating a call centre based service, we’re PCG accredited, APSCO compliant, we’ve won three awards from Accountancy Age, two National customer service awards, 5 best contractor awards from CUK and yet occasionally we still fail to meet clients expectations.
We have over 11,000 clients and occasionally we do drop the ball. If you let me know who your accountant is I’ll get them fired, sorry I mean have a chat with them (we rarely shoot accountants these days).
The above sounds like a sales pitch but I really just wanted to say how serious we are at trying to provide the service we promote on the website and over the telephone, we are always looking at ways to improve our service and be proactive.
It’s easy to spout all sorts of rubbish on a website but you have to look at the whole picture to really get a feeling for if they genuinely mean it and strive to meet what they say or are just saying what you want to hear.Comment
