    simple interest vs compound.

take their/your money .. overpay your mortgage (or buy a BTL flat) ...and you will playing the swap market !

in 2008 I overpaid my mortgage ...and have been getting the compound benefit of that for the last 5 years .... (potential penalties at simple interest rates).

Think there are much better vehicles out there than a CTD especially as this is likely to take many years to resolve

        refunds from HMRC

Has anybody else had problems getting refunds from HMRC since all this began?

I requested a refund 4 weeks ago for £3K worth of overpaid PAYE/NIC and haven't yet seen site of it.

I'm obviously getting paranoid that they are making life difficult for us all.

Some people have met resistance but in all the cases I know of perseverance has paid off.

Just badger them until they cough up.

            Yesterday in Parliament....

            Robert Simms (Poole, Con)

"May we have a debate about morality in the tax system, with particular reference to section 58 of the Finance Act 2008? Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs is trying to collect tax retrospectively from some 2,200 people, including constituents of mine. Some of them will have to sell their homes. We really need to debate this issue and reconsider it."

            Andrew Lansley (South Cambridgeshire, Conservative)

"If I may, I will ask Ministers in the Treasury to respond directly to my hon. Friend, although he will know that the subject was discussed during consideration of the Finance Act. We are careful to ensure that the instances in which legislation has a retrospective effect are minimised (), and that when it does occur, it is subject to specific advice from the Law Officers about its appropriateness."

Or, it's not me, the lawyers made me do it.

Interesting that there is none of the usual digs here. Is this a change of tactic ?

                Parliamentary question

Tax Avoidance: 14 Oct 2013: Hansard Written Answers and Statements - TheyWorkForYou

                Graeme Morrice (Livingston, Labour)

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what assessment HM Revenue and Customs made of its chances of success in litigation under the law as it stood prior to bringing forward the legislative proposals announced in Budget Note 66 on 12 March 2008.

David Gauke (Exchequer Secretary, HM Treasury; South West Hertfordshire, Conservative)

Due to ongoing litigation between HM Revenue and Customs and users of the wholly artificial tax avoidance scheme that led to Budget Note 66 it would be inappropriate for me to comment on this matter.

Everything he has done and said since coming to power has been inappropriate, why be concerned now?

Same here - £3,500 in my case.

I filled in the online Request A Refund form twice - no acknowledgement, reply or refund received. I then filled in the online Contact Us form asking for action - no acknowledgement or reply after five days, despite the blurb on that form stating they aim to reply within two.

I've given up on their web tech to be honest - I don't think anyone is monitoring it. My next step will be to send a written letter, demanding at the very least a response.

Perhaps this explains the lack of response: Staff quit HMRC in highest numbers for four years as stress rises
