      India to review Retrospective Tax

Indian finance minister Palaniappan Chidambaram to review tax law that landed Vodafone with $2bn bill - Telegraph

Looks like India has woken up.

Now we just need the UK to also review retrospective law passing.

Is it worth trying to publicise more the fact that the UK is impassing retrospective tax laws.
I feel India will bow to the pressure of this, based primarily on the negative press that it generated, and subsequent reduction in international investment.

This is an interesting snippet from the article:

Vodafone argues that India’s attempts to retrospectively apply tax law changes is illegal and is seeking international arbitration.

Thanks for bringing that article to our attention. I have forwarded to the steering group.

              Gauke response

              DR, et all

I have received a response from gauke via MP. All seems standard but I haven't seen anyone comment on his last paragraph..

"You may be aware that the amendment referrred to by Mr Contractin, which asked for a review of the impact of section 58, rather than for repeal of its retrospective element, was withdrawn after debate"

Has that now closed the door on this path?

I received a similar Gauke reply via my MP on Friday too. She remains supportive but wonders what more she can do. I have sent her the latest NTRT rebuttal letter and briefing pack, to steer her in the right direction. Have also copied everything to Whitehouse.

Makes me wonder why we bother having MPs. Clearly the vast majority support us. Yet they can do nothing - they have to defer to government policy. Which is set by civil servants.

This post is a another pointless rant which will get me nowhere.

No, there will be other opportunities to table amendments etc. This was explained in the FAQ which accompanied an earlier NTRT update, which is reproduced here:

                      Hi DR

I was aware that this had been covered previously, but was also checking whether the letter I received is the latest 'standard' response that was being sent out?

I'll get the responses sent out today.

                      Cheers
