If you're in a rush your might want to avid HBOS. A few of my clients have been complaining loudly about the time things take to get done with them. Something as simple as getting internet banking set up is taking up to a month.

I've been with Cater Allen for 3 years and am very impressed, no problems. When you ring up staff they are intelligent and helpful. I like their online banking website, nice and secure and very clear to use.

Cater Allen is Abbey National AKA Santander. The CA 'call centre' is actually the same people at Santander and I walk past them everyday to get a cuppa.

I used to do my business banking via cater allen but they then wanted a minimum balance of 5k to qualify for free banking. Obviously myself and many other contractors jibbed them off if they are now offerring free banking again.

As i said, CA are really Santander and while I used Abbey's free business banking, they had a major incident a few years back where no one could access their business accounts and withdrawn money nor pay bills. So I jibbed them off as well.

Im now with Co Op via the FSB so get free banking. Their gui is a bit tulipe in all honesty but its free!
I couldn't give two fornicators! Yes, really!

My years free banking with barclays is up. They are looking to charge £6 a month so I am looking to switch accounts. I am quite keen on the coop as they have a good range of savings accounts too (war chest is getting bigger now). Is it worth joining the FSB to get the coop free account?

IMO yes, although FSB membership cost about 100 quid (1st year includes a joining fee so maybe another 20 quid?), you get free banking with the Co Op plus every anniversary of joing FSB, your account gets credited with 25 quid.

You also have access to all FSB benefits, free legals etc, etc.

That said, the Co Op bank GUI is not the best. You can download lots of financial reports via csv or pdf. If you want access to cash, you can use Post Offices. Since I dont from my business account, it isnt an issue.

Cater Allen - not too bad most of the time. They did accidentally disappear 10K euros from my account a few months back though. Was not impressed by that especially when they told me it was never there in the first place for a while.

Bit of a cock-up which took them days to sort out. Cheeky sods offered me 35E compensation (ended up with about 80E when I kicked off!) for spending hours on the phone to them trying to sort it out.

Too early to comment really, but my CA account was opened through an accountant, so the minimum balance was waived (I think that only applies to a cold application). I've been waiting several weeks for the internet banking password though. They separate out posting the various IDs/passwords by multiple business days, which makes sense for security, I suppose, but it extends the wait enormously. Nice to have an actual person on the line immediately rather than an automated system.
