Working in America: Immigration Lawyer or Agency Contact Needed

Hi All,

I am seriously looking to move to the US, ideally New York to work there. At this time I don't mind if it's a permie role or a contract; whichever will be easier.

Does anybody have any experience of moving to and working in the States and can you please provide an immigration lawyer or agency I can contact to discuss it further?

Anybody have any ideas as to how to go about finding a job in the States? Surely there must be a specialist agency or what not, that I can contact?

I've tried googling, but I just get advice about visas etc., and I understand how that works already! Any advice at all will be greatly appreciated.

Yeah of course it's fked, but there are always ways, companies are still hiring and many still have need for special skill sets etc. So I wouldn't really be surprised if I got one.

Have you tried searching for and signing up to a British expats in the USA forum and looking for the answer or posting on there?

I know it's not the obvious thing to do but just like yourself I'm completely flumoxed so thought I'd suggest this 'out-there' idea.

The Americans are very protective about any non-American coming over to work there. It may not be easy to secure work over there unless you have a niche skill which is required. Good luck.

You either try for an employment based Green Card, or a work based visa with a company.

With the company based visa, you are tied to that company, so they can royally screw you over - and you either have to leave the country, or smile and say thank you.

Green card's allow you to work for anyone, but have a waiting list of years, even for graduates - unless you have a Master's degree or higher - the waiting list is much shorter. But even then, expect a minimum of 6 months for the visa to be processed - and you still need to have a company willing to take you on to begin with.

One of my reasons for taking out Irish Citizenship was that it enables me to enter the Green Card Lottery and thus give me a chance. Being Irish and wanting to work in America I have a much greater chance than someone who's British it has to be said. Immigration, temporary work visas, etc, all much more accessible to the Irish.
