I got a call a while back from one of their lot saying that they are all jumping ship and that my accounts would not be done so started looking for someone else to do it - taking the hit financially of paying someone else for work that I'd already paid uptons to do.

The lad who was going to do it had a week on holiday and was going to do it on his return. However in that time Tina contacted me and said that Uptons could do the accounts !!

About 2 days later a set of prepared accounts and my personal tax returns etc turned up for me to validate !!!

It would appear that Upton's are either no longer dealing with their client's affairs or have requested that another company deals with the outstanding matters.

We have just received an email, from a 3rd party accountant, regarding a client's affairs that we are now handling:

Dear Simone,

without me going through the figures that you list which I have no real inclination to do, I would like to state that having started work here on the 15 August I am unable to say why the client was advised on the amounts to be paid. Any such person that was responsible for the preparation of these returns has also left so you may take any explanation for errors as you so wish. I would like to ask why you are going back so far and how you have come by these figures but you are no doubt more thorough than other accountants. Given my lack of knowledge regarding this client and his VAT, may I suggest that you either correct any such errors that you perceive to exist or leave the matter as I will not be able to help you.

We are simply attempting to establish what VAT, PAYE/NIC & Corporation Tax the client owes - as we do with all our new clients - it seems that this may be a new idea?

Seems very strange as myself and the other guys I work with have all been dealing directly with the people there....why not try emailing them to get the details you need? Surely be easier!!

Expected to be honest. This however will not prevent courts placing further restrictions that will likely outlast any bankruptcy conditions if he is found guilty of a criminal offence. Will this mean people will get their money back? No, but atleast it won't be a "clean slate" after 3 or 5 years.

I thought it was supposed to be set at a hearing earlier in August but have heard nothing since...

I think August was the appeal to get out of custody/jail and Darren was successful. The last I heard the committal was adjourned until 1st Sept with a plea hearing set 6 weeks after that. If he plea's not guilty then the court date is expected to be in 2012.
