anyone else had a P800 from Hector?

mate and i used the same brolly for half of the 09/10 tax year

he's received a P800 advising that he owes over £2k in tax

was expecting mine to drop through the door as well, but got a global letter from the brolly advising "don't worry we're speaking to HMRC don't pay anything" etc

there is one line in the mail that concerned me a little:

"We have contacted HMRC to discuss the issue and have agreed a course of action to rectify the problem. In order to resolve the mistreatment of last year’s employee expense claims we need to submit a counter claim to amend your account and reduce any incorrect benefit in kind tax calculations to zero."

and then they say they'll said a letter for me to sign and send back to HMRC

just wondering if anyone else got one of these and what the risks are

It might simply be that your brolly submitted incorrect figures - for example submitting job expenses on your P11D but then not claiming them as allowable on the tax return. Have they told you exactly why this occurred?

I would imagine you have more to worry about if your brolly was based overseas than if it were UK based.

they haven't been specific and they are the UK largest, so imagine they should have things should get sorted (fingers crossed)

It's also of course always worth considering that it's HMRC's fault. They do seem to often make mistakes when processing P11Ds and the like!

I'd suggest giving them a call and asking them to explain exactly what happened and why. You can then put your mind at rest rather than worrying that you'll get an unexpected tax bill.
