IR35 no, but something along similar lines was inevitable.

At the time IR35 came in quite a lot (of the admittedly limited number, but rapidly growing, contractors) were essentially taking the michael with paying all dividends and no NI contributions beyond the quarterly stamp.

IR35 was poorly crafted and implemented, but it was inevitable as a lot of taxation was being avoided once that had been spotted irrespective of which party was in power they would go after the possible revenue.

Back onto the actual thread topic I feel awful for you guys and I'll continue to do what I can to support any proper action that the Donkey organises as judgement aside I'm fundamentally opposed to retrospection.

Do a search - mentioned loads of times - CTD = Certificate of Tax Deposit.

Basically for every £1 worth of CTD you hold you neutralise the interest the taxman charges on £1 of tax owed from the point you buy the CTD. Main problem with the CTD is the paltry rate of interest it acrues - averaged less than 1% a year over the time I held them....

It is something probably too late to use.

            Dear Sir,

Thank you for your interest in our article. It was based on reading the 20-page High Court judgement.

In it Mr Justice Parker made it very clear that the Isle of Man tax arrangements had no genuine commercial purpose and were artificial; that the users of the scheme had been warned over several years by HMRC that the scheme might turn out to be illegal; that the users had every opportunity to pay "on account" or put money aside in case the scheme was eventually ruled illegal; and that it was quite proper for the government to outlaw the arrangements with retrospective effect.

It is quite clear that the scheme's users entered into it to dodge the normal levels of UK tax.

What else did they think they were doing? Contributing to the greater good?

            Yours sincerely,

            Ian Pollock

Well, there's the balanced view of a state funded institution. Objective and fair? And while we're talking about 'dodgy' Just remind me of what happened over the 'dodgy' dossier, when the BBC turned on its own and kissed New Labour's arse? Contributing to the greater good? The truth was the greater good and where were our great defenders of the truth then? Personally, I thought the BBC actions were cowardly, a shameful blemish on a noble institution. It had an obligation to report the truth. So why don't you shove your sarcasm and just report the facts correctly? Also, seeing as you have have responded using the BBC mail and listing your job title, can we assume that these are the views of the BBC?

I know, I'm ranting at the wind, but it's therapeutic.

One thing this whole sorry mess has done, is to open my eyes to the joke that is new labour, and especially the vindictiveness of the goverment machine. So much so that I am considering joining the conservative party and maybe even getting involved just so I can help as much as I can to get Brown, and Lurch out of power.

I see labour for what it is now, tulip with money (my money!) and only out for their own.
Politicians are wonderfull people, as long as they stay away from things they don't understand, like working for a living!

Sorry to hear the news yesterday folks, but keep up the good fight. Just round 1 and a long way to go yet!

That said, watching this unfold along with the shameful ways the country is run has all but eroded my faith in the country and taken away any pride of being British. Seems you can illegally start a war if it suits and get away with it, but if your face doesn't fit you can be rogered for playing by the rules if/when someone somewhere decides it suits them to change what the rules have been all along.

I'm thinking southern France or Italy, somewhere warmer.
