Hi there,
I'm an Australian whose been a UK resident and working for a UK company for the last 4 years. I'm about to move to South Africa for around 9 months in Sept (before travelling back to Australia) and I'm going to keep working for my current company for about 6-9 of them. I don't intend to return to the UK anytime soon.
My company was going to keep me on as a permanent employee but their insurance company can't maintain the current insurance agreements so my company has told me I will need to be self-employed/contractor. They spoke to inland revenue and IR said this was possible.
I work in IT and broadband in South Africa is ridiculously expensive (~£100-£200 a month) so I'm wondering what I should set myself up as (self-employed, work through umbrella company, or setup ltd company) in order to gain the best tax advantages. I was just going to rejoin my previous umbrella company to avoid the hassle. Does anyone have any experience with this and/or could make any suggestions about which route to take?
