What I have difficulty understanding and putting into some frame of reference is the background that lead up to you being raided.

It seems to me you have come here for a rant, and nothing more.

You were receiving a split income - this you admit.
You were investigated, something to do with the agency etc. as a result of this split income.

The details surrounding the raid are somewhat ... dubious. What you are describing simply does not happen. Clearly the authorities had reason to believe that there was something illegal regarding your tax affairs. This is not Nazi germany, the gestapo do not turn up to raid peoples homes unannounced and threaten to break down the doors.

Authorities to turn up with court orders and search warrants, but these will only have been issued when, in this case, the finanzamt can demonstrate "probable cause" to a court official (judge). Clearly they are not going to tell you what they know, or what they think they know.

You say that this happens alot "in your arena". And what arena would that be, may I ask? We have all read/heard stories of IT contractors being raided, and yet you state that you are not in IT. So what are you in?

If this does indeed happen alot "in your arena", then a raid (in whatever form it actually took) should be of no surprise to you, and therefore you should have expected it.

Could it be that some established high rate contractors who have been enjoying the relatively luctrative yet easy money are concerned their German market could be undercut by low rate Brits who seek work in Germany given the tough conditions of the UK market - hence the propaganda to make Germany sound as unattractive as possible to lessen the competition ?

Raids per se do occur (when the local judge authorises a search warrant), but just because there is suspicion that someone has committed tax evasion this does not mean that the Finanzamt have the right to abuse the law as this would violate the German constitution, the EU convention on human rights which the German government has ratified and possibly also data protection laws. In a respected German magazine called 'Spiegel' there were reports in these cases that the 'victim' was able to claim compensation.
