Home & Away - HMRC soap opera

This just gets better. Found this about the offshoring of HMRC's leaseholds:

    From the National Audit Office.
    http://www.nao.org.uk/idoc.ashx?docI...68c&version=-1

"The location of Mapeley STEPS Limited in Bermuda has no material effect on
the overall value for money of this deal to the UK taxpayer. Mapeley STEPS
estimated that if it had been required to bring the STEPS properties onshore, its bid price would have had to increase by £55 million to cover the extra UK tax that might have been due.(5) This is not a material figure in terms of a £1.5 billion deal or in the difference between the Mapeley STEPS bid and the nearest bidder and was not therefore a deciding factor in selecting Mapeley STEPS."

    (5) This figure has not been agreed with the Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise since the Departments cannot comment on the tax affairs of individuals in public.

So £55M is "not a material figure" in terms of £1.5billion? Well it seems that £200M is according to Jane Kennedy in terms of £439billion of tax receipts in 2008. Hmmm, as a ratio, £55M is MASSIVE compared to £200M. Apples and oranges?

    (5) But they're quite happy to talk about our tax affairs in public...

love letter, straight through the heart..

Well I finally got the long awaited love letters today; really made me well up knowing I was missed by my loved one from youknowwhere....

my loved one always greets me warmly... 'Dear Mr LoverLover' it started... I started to melt in anticipation. 'I miss you, love you and most of all WANT you....' or you wallet or something like that it said...

she does like to open her 'potty' mouth now and again and take the dirty road to hell if you know what I mean .. wink wink nudge nudge... I wondered what wallet meant

Needless to say, the dirty little thing kept the role play going ....and the financial metaphors were flying.....an odd love letter I thought, but a love letter nonetheless... Towards the end she hit me with a big number...at this point I was nearly reaching for the tissues.... for lots of different reasons

The numbers I wondered, were they a disguised marriage date or something..... she even went as far as to say I better respond by a certain date with the big number... again I think she means a marriage proposal and date, she won't sit on the shelve forever I guess....

      life is sweet sometimes...

who said I was a pessimist.

They seem to be treating us in the same ay as the offshore dudes...i.e. we have the money stashed somewhere, they just want to get their hands on it...they dont get it...we have been living off this money, not squirrelling it away somewhere for a rainy day....hence them saying it s a surefire £200m recoup, they think its just sloshing around in an account somewhere....

oooo how misguided or maybe thick HMRC can be....in the words of big brother u decide!

I got one of those last week, theyve already opened an inquiry into the year and calculated it on the CNs which have been appealled but got one asking for more info for an inquiry... as usual either wasting time or trying to upset people.... either way mine got answered by MP ;-)

                  Ask Dave Hartnett a Question

                  http://business.timesonline.co.uk/to...cle6774598.ece

In the latest in The Times’ Ask the Boss series, Dave Hartnett, Permanent Secretary for Tax at HM Revenues and Customs, agrees to answer your questions.

You can ask Britain’s most senior taxman anything you like.

What measures need to be taken to stop companies’ off-shore tax avoidance? What is the HMRC doing to address mistakes with tax codes? Why did you choose to start using debt collectors to chase late-payers?

Send The Times your question using the form below by Friday, November 6.

We will then select the best questions, put them to Mr Hartnett and we will publish his answers on Friday, November 13.

PS. questions have to be in today
