A reply to CIOT asking about retrospective tax. I especially like the wording on para 2 page 2:
"Last year HMRC's disclosure scheme revealed that the latest version of the scheme was being used on an unprecented scale. Given this and the wilful intent of these schemes to circumvent the clear purpose of the 1987 leglislation, the Government considered it appropriate to clarify the leglislation."

Poor Jane. So she starts by referring to a "scheme" (singular) then refers to "schemes" (plural) when she appears to be talking about the same thing(s). Then, and I like this, she refers to the "clear" leglislation which the Governenment then clarifies. Wow! Anyone know what O'level English Language mark she got?

This worked when I used it a couple of months ago.

As you said, I tried the on-line submission again, and received an email stating that I would have to contact my local tax office to get such information, and no they wouldn't give me contact details.

As said earlier, they have no switchboard facilities, and do not take calls from the public (who I thought they served!!) so I will have to go to my local tax office, take a ticket and queue. Should be interesting, as in the past my SA's have mysteriously gone missing when I posted them in, and I would incur a late penalty charge, so to mitigate this, I now personally hand it in to the tax office.

By the way, I have signed all ongoing petitions, and passed these around to other members I know of, who do not use or are aware of this forum.

HMRC (this time the valuation section) is pushing forward with more retrospective taxation. This time the transport industry has a powerful ally in the name of Alan Johnson.

Seems like HMRC see retrospection as a useful tool in their armoury, unless it gets nipped in the bud with our JR.

hahaha, did you happen to see the legendary £200m quoted as the recoverable sum....funny all the amounts ever quoted as recoverable by HMRC are always £200m...just proves they dont have a F****** clue how much money these things are gonna make them, just pissing in the wind...

I see in todays Guardian that Timms is moving to Communications. Looks like a demotion to me. I wonder if he will do as good a job with the telephones as he did with BN66 and the JCHR.

It sounds like he might be keeping his job at the Treasury as well. Not that it makes much difference to us who's in "charge", as we all know that it's the officials behind the scenes who are calling the shots on behalf of HMRC.
