    Self Assesment

I started contracting last year ( May 2008 to be exact ). My accountant has not contacted me with regards to any Self Assesment.

Is my Self Assesment date this Jan 31 2009 or next Jan 31 2010?

Just want to make sure I'm not panicking needlessly.

    Regards

OH MY GOD YOU'VE NOT ALREADY DONE YOUR SELF ASSESSMENT? AND IT IS ALREADY GONE 1ST JANUARY.

    OMIGOD! OMIGOD!

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO???

    HTH.

(I have absolutely no idea why I posted this. I think it must be time to open me a beer.)

Just send an email to your accountant, and make a note to yourself to phone them (in your client's time) tomorrow. Then join me in a beer 'cos you can't fix it tonight.

depends on your year end date i would guess it will be next year you will need to do a self assessment.

Best idea may be to call your accountant and ask him, self assessment is personal tax, not company so he may just not be expecting to do it......

Self assessment is your own personal tax affairs, separate to the company.

I'm no accountant, but from what I know if you are doing your self assessment tax return for the tax year 2007/08, then the online deadline will be Jan 09. Did you get a letter from HMRC saying they wanted you to do one?

Just a tip here, but to do it online requires a Government Gateway login, and the pin numbers etc can take a few days to arrive in the post, so it's better you go and register asap just to be safe.

I wouldn't have thought your accountant would do your SA for you unless you specifically asked and paid for this? You should really just try it yourself it's not that difficult, if you only ever earned a permie wage in 07/08 then it will just be your P45/P60 details which go on, theres another 15 or so pages of crap which relate to all sorts of other tax matters, but if none of those affect you, they are just left blank etc..

I have a letter saying that my company first accounting period end date is 31 March 2009? Mind you it has a Corporation Tax header .......

Im thinking that maybe as SA is personal tax it would be from April to March( same for a normal PAYE employee ....... so for me it would be April 2008 to March 2009 and to be filed by 31 Jan 2010?

Yes, that's your company year end, not your SA.. they are two different things. Your corporation tax and returns are due 9 months after this date, so you have plenty time for this. Your accountant should be sorting this for you though...

Correct, SA is your personal tax and runs 5th April> each year.. your 08/09 tax return will be due after this date (5th April and beyond) and your deadline for this would be Jan 2010.

2007 was permie so was PAYE. Jan-March 2008 was umbrella so was also PAYE really.

I had already done the gateway thing earlier in the year just to be safe. Thing is I registered for SA for both me and wife ( after starting Ltd co in May ).

I checked wife's SA login and it says she needed to do tax return, I checked mine and it says they havent asked me for tax return. Hence was confused as wife didnt work that period ( April 07 -Mar 08 ) ?

In that case you can only have two possible requirements:-

                1) 2007/2008 SA.

                2) 2008/2009 SA.

If there is no demand from HMRC for 1. then you should be ok until next year, although I would try doing your 2008/09 in May or June, don't leave it until next January is my advice.. gives plenty of time to sort out problems.
