    Jury Service

    Hi,

I've deferred it once but now have been called up for Jury Service in April.

Now with a new house, wife out of work, chance that I will get laid off if I am out of work for more than 2 weeks does anyone have any advice.

Personally I'd rather take a £1000 fine for not turning up and working for the week than get be paid a pittence for attending. Simply put I can't afford to do this.

Any advice gladly recieved and apologies if this is a recurring topic.

I note that if I register with PGC then I can claim insurance? Any other way around it?

Write them a letter advising of your situation and they will defer it again.

WHS. Did exactly this and was advised they wouldn't darken my doorstep again. PCGPlus insurance does cover you for jury service, but like any insurance, you have to be covered before you are aware of the call up.

        Throw a sickie?

You can borrow my "father 4 justice" t-shirt if you like. wear it in court and when asked just say you hate courts and would find anyone not guilty. This has never been tried in practice yet : but I would love to know if it works.

I think you're gonna have to suck it up. You only get one let-off from jury service, barring a very good reason (like "I'm dead")

I'd have thought getting it deferred last time around would have been your warning shot to take out the PCG cover - it was for me. Too late now as they won't consider claims within the first 60 days anyway.

Off on a tangent slightly but it struck me reading his thread whether it is possible or not to volunteer for Jury Service?

With some bench time looming possibly it might be a good time to get it out of the way. And it would do my self esteem wonders if I had the opportunity to send down some crims while looking for work.

I'd love to do jury service, especially if it was some scummy chav in the dock.

I wouldn't bother listening to the bulltulip evidence his brief dreamt up, just sit there, eye up the fit stenographer, and give a guilty verdict at the end.

Not sure if that works these days - they cracked down on people avoiding it.

Of course you could just deny receiving the letter and not show up? Someone when I did it turned up and explained how difficult it was for them with small children and no-one who could care for them, and they were told just to go.

Mind you, having been let off once, I think you may be lucky to get out a second time.
