I want a Nokia N82 but they won't be available on Vodafone (the only network I can rely on where MyCo head office is). Can I expense a handset through the company and have a SIM only contract, also through the company?

Seems buying it myself and claiming the cost as an expense would not be permitted..

Some employees use their own mobile telephones to make business calls. Where this is the case, Class 1 NICs and tax are payable if you:
* reimburse the cost of the mobile telephone, service charges or the cost of private calls

Not quite.
The example you posted is worded quite badley, but what they are talking about is the company giving you some money (extra pay, a bonus etc..) for the use of your own personal phone, but you retain ownership of the phone.
However if you buy the phone on behalf of the company (i.e. pay for it yourself and claim it back as an expense), then the company owns the phone and not you.

Or you could buy it and sell it to the company.
You can make payments on behalf of the company and claim them back. As long as the asset is owned by yourco.Comment

Ah that makes more sense. HMRC have trouble making things make sense.
