Hi,
I've decided to leave my perm job and start contracting in mid March this year. I'm now in the process of finding an accountant that can do the accounts for me. I actually started a limited Company in September last year with almost no transactions made. I think all I've got is 1 invoice and a couple of receipts. My financial year is coming to an end in the beginning of March and I would need help to prepare all required paperwork (whatever needs to be done because I don't know) for this date. I'm considering using one of the big contracting specialists (SJD, Upton or PlanIT etc) in order to take care of my accounts. Since my FY is soon coming to an end I would ideally use this accountant to help me preparing for the year end in March. I read somewhere (can't remember if it was on this forum) that you may have to pay accounting service charges for a full year (£600-£1000) in order to get them preparing all the things for a year-end. In my case with only a few transactions made and with no payroll set up it sounds like it is way too much money. I'm still going to check with these accounting firms to see what they charge for this but I would be interested in your opinion and suggestions as well. One option would be to get a "cheap" accountant to prepare for my year-end in March and then use the "contracting specialists" once I start for real.
Another question I have is if there are any advantages in having the accountant locally? The once I've been looking at are based in Blackpool while i'm living in London. Are there occasions where you really need to go and see them in person? or can everything be done by phone, post, email, online-systems?
Many thanks
