Business Expenses - the definitive guide?

Can someone please point me to a place on the HMRC website where they advise on what can be qualified as a business expense and what can't?

There is too much of a difference of opinion and I find it next to impossible to get a definitive answer on anything HMRC related. I imagine their rules will be down to interpretation too, nonetheless I'd like to form my own interpretation direct from the HMRC's mouth.
