Self-employed Definition

I'm fairly new to contracting, and am currently working though a composite (seems like a bad move now so plan to set up a Ltd before April). My question is do I currently need to register as self-employed?

I collect dividends, so fall outside IR35, but don't have my own company, so would assume that I don't have to (until I set my own Ltd up). Is this assumption correct?

Any insight would be appreciated

Collecting divideds has NOTING to do with IR35. Just becuase you take them doesnt mean that you can or should.

You're confusing having a Ltd. company with being a sole trader. Go start a Ltd. company (now - you don't have to use it straight away), and then in effect you are an employee of your company.

I was confused about the term self-employed before , but it seems that in HMRC terms - self-employed are only sole-traders and ppl in partnerships.

If you are in LLC you are not self-employed but Director/Employee.

Great - that's easy then! I do plan to start a Ltd company asap, then that gives me plenty of time to move to before April (ideally I'll get it sorted out far before then).

Depending on your level of motivation you could get it done in a matter of weeks. Get an accountant first and they will do the hard work for you.

And this is why Gordo is closing down MSCs.

You are not "outside of IR35" because you "collect dividends".

You collect dividends if YOU can show that you are outside IR35. But as you don't seem to understand this, you can't have done it, can you? And some third party has decided to pay you via dividends anyway.
