Can anyone recommend a user-friendly software package for keeping and maintaining basic Limited Company accounts (with VAT) which doesn't cost too much? Plenty on the market but difficult to find one which does the basics without spending too much.

Software
Sage Instant - best book keeping package on the market for small companies IMHO, however can be a bit tricky if you've not used these types of software.
Quickbooks - looks pretty, very American terminology, decent, but again if you've not used an accounts system before, maybe a bit tricky.
Excel Spreadsheet - get your accountant to send you an example spreadsheet, easy to use and manipulate to your requirements. -
