TAX: European contractor working in UK

    Hello colleagues,

I couldn't find clear information on this topic, so I decided to ask my question here.

I work as a Dutch sole trader on a short project for a customer in the UK. Since I've worked here for over 6 months I definitely qualify as a tax resident for the UK. However, as a Dutch business (and my main residency is still there) I will also have to pay taxes in Holland.

My question is, if any of the forum members have been in the same situation, how will I be taxed for this year? Will I have to file the declaration in the UK and then indicate that I've paid all taxes in NL or will it be more complicated than just that?

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Regards,
    Nico

Get an accountant. But you will receive tax relief for foreign tax paid against your UK tax liability.

      Hi Nico

There is a double taxation treaty in place between UK and Netherlands for such cases as yours, we have many clients that report taxes in more than one country both EU and worldwide - its quite straightforward so don't worry about it too much, credit is given for the tax paid in the other country to ensure your income is not taxed twice. Just be sure you are aware of the filing deadlines in all countries involved to ensure you don't pick up penalties and follow the advice in the previous post - all countries have different quirks to their tax systems and its far better to pay a resident accountant to file for you than get it wrong.

You cannot normally be tax resident in two countries. If you are a Dutch citizen , then the Netherlands has priority over the UK.You should have set yourself up to pay social security in NL and tax in the UK.Under EU rules you can do this for 2 years.
