Hi all
I have been contracting for a few years through my limited company and built up a healthy war chest over the years (taking out a low salary/dividends as to minimise personal tax). I am intending to stop contracting and move abroad, and was thinking of doing an MVL and claiming entrepreneur's tax relief.
I just want to make sure that the timing of me moving abroad does not cause any complications regarding my tax liability in the UK and the country I am moving to (in the EU and has full double taxation agreement with the UK).
From a UK point of view:
- Assuming I receive the capital distribution (after the MVL is all completed) during this tax year for which I am UK resident, does it matter if I then go abroad near the end of 2018? Will I lose my right to claim ER if, at the time of doing my UK tax return (for 2018-2019) I am not a UK resident?
From an international point of view: I believe that if I receive the money in the UK at a point where I am not tax resident in the other country, I shouldn't have any additional tax liability (and even if I was tax resident, the double taxation agreement would hopefully mean I don't have to pay extra tax).
Any comments on this? Does anyone have any good recommendations for an accountant that specialises in this sort of complex international tax considerations?
Many thanks
