    Desperately need advice

    Scenario:

I was approached by a recruitment agent for a 3 month contract. I made it clear from the start that I wasn't overly keen on the job but went to the interview to find out more about it. I was offered the job but for 6 months instead of 3 and for 17/hour instead of 20. We negotiated and the recruitment agent went back to his client and asked for 3 months on 19/hour. His client agreeded but in the mean time my circumstances changed and when the recruitment agent rang me back I turned him down. He now says that because I made him go back to the client and the client accepted my terms if I turn him down he will black list me from a whole bunch of recruitment companies operating in London.

Is this for real? Can he do this? Does this type of blacklist system even exist?

    Sooooooo angry right now!

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Ben

Black list is an urban myth in my opionion, I had the same lines used on me before by an agent when I changed my mind, and that was 5 years ago and Ive never had a problem getting a job after that. What agency is it name and shame ?

That's what I was hoping to hear. Where do they get off making threats because you turned down a job? I told this guy I would call him on Monday for a final decision so I could buy some time to investigate this black list.

Thanks for your speedy reply Ivor.

      Cheers

They make threats in an attempt to bully you into the role because they want thier cut and if you turn them down another agency may supply them with a contrator and they wont get thier cut.

It's all rubbish, you are not under contract so they can't do anything and if you want to get picky he has lied by offering you £20/hour to start with. I'd tell him to sling his hook.

If a pimp thinks they can place you and make money off you they won't give a monkies if you turned down a previous gig.

I think the black list goes as far as word of mouth in that I very much doubt anyone from the same agency would deal with you for oooohhh at least a month The agents are all out to make there commission and back stab each other anyway, so I doubt they believe what other agents says anyway. I wouldnt worry.

Well that makes perfect sense Ardesco. I hadn't thought of it that way. These pimps (that word has completely replaced recruitment agent in my vocab from now on) don't seems to have any morals or honor so why would one care if I turned another down.

I'm feeling better all the time and looking forward to my conversation with this tool on Monday.

I had a row with one agency, about three weeks before my contract finished. The row (over pay) lasted much of the week and got VERY heated - until I worked out that their (newly defined) rules allowed me to claim MORE money from them than I was previously
Didn't stop them from ringing me up about a week after that one finished, and offering me a new contract!

Even one part of S3 doesn't like the others - so wouldn't co-operate on a blacklist!

Chalk it to experience - and choose your wording carefully next time, "yes if you did that I might well be interested" There is no contractual committment in that at all

One word of warning though - don't let them get hold of info now of any places you are going for interview etc - I heard last week of one did get info about where a contractor was going & rang up the interviewer and told lies so he wouldnt get a contract, to get his own back. They will be sore for at least a week or two - so tread warily.

You are perfectly within your rights to turn down a contract at any stage prior to signing. Tell the agent to grow up, there aren't many agents out there who would honour a verbal agreement, and you shouldn't have to do so either, especially when they behave in this way.
There is no such thing as a blacklist. An individual pimp might "mark your file", but one of his colleagues will still happily place you if he thought you could earn him a few quid.
The rate looks a bit low as well. Have a look on this list: http://forums.contractoruk.com/showp...41&postcount=7
It wouldn't surprise me if your agency is on there (the situation you describe bears all the S3 hallmarks). If it is, make a note of the rest, and avoid if at all possible.
His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...
