    Limited company "trading as"

    Hi experts,

I am working on plan b and am using a trading name / trading as, because it would confuse plan b customers if I were to use the LTD company name directly.

My question is about registering a trading name and also about trademarks. The alternative is to run two limited companies, but that seems like double the work load.

Anyone using a trading name, and any advice?

    DP.

This one seems to cover it best I think...

The only thing, I have seen, when you hold 2 directorships, it can attract heat.
A friend of mine got totally, looked at last year and they said it was because he has two companies.

Obviously, if you are all above board, then this won't be an issue.

        I've got 3, never had a problem.

Anyway I have one website where I'm "trading as" because it doesn't earn enough money to warrant another company and I just wanted to use company money to see if it's viable. Just make sure you put "is a trading name of" on everything, ie invoices, website, letter heads etc.

You can register trade marks etc (I think it was about £400) but as long as you can prove you were trading under the name it's usually not an issue.

        Good luck.

I've never heard of HMRC (I presume that's the "they") doing this. They'd be overwhelmed with work. Alan sugar, for example, has 62 directorships, and I don't think he's been subjected to an enquiry because of it.

Maybe it was because your friend had 1 business conveniently split into 2 to avoid vat or such like? Pure speculation from me of course.

You say that like no CUK poster could possibly have any friends.
