Company address

For various reasons I've had to move house a lot over the last few years and this is unlikely to change.

Am considering using a service like this one http://www.britishmonomarks.co.uk/ who will let you register your company at a prestigious sounding address, put up a little sign with your co. name on it, and forward mail to wherever you tell them.

Has anyone done something similar? Is it likely to make hector suspicious?

Don't waste your money

I can see no reason why you would need this, your accountant should be able to offer their address as the Registered Office.

Beware company ID theft. If you use a service like this make sure that they have tight security checks on instructions issued to redirect your mail. If they don't, then any changes to company officers etc, which are confirmed by mail from Companies House, may end up going to a fake address.

I thought it was a requirement for certain documents to be available at your registered office? Can't remember where I heard this - from my accountant I think...

You can have a 'head office' address as well as a registered address. The company concerned offer virtual offices but not, as far as I can ascertain from their website, a company registered address service. Thus you would have to keep changing the registered company address with companies house whenever you move. The British Monomark service is really for if you need a prestigious office address and possible answering services etc in order to get and retain customers - which of course depends on your business. for example, if you've set yourself up as a "boutique" consultancy.

Best bet is to sign up for a firm doing company secretary services where you get the mail forwarded as well as they look after the legal aspects of your firm for you and keep your essential documents, all for a fee. Accountants often offer this service or you can sign up for a specialist firm like Hanover Company Services or similar.

I already use my accountant's address as the company registered office. They seem to use my home address for VAT though. I'll check with them why that's the case.

Not sure I'm with you on this one... it depends on whether it will help with the business. I use a virtual office service (though not the one linked, who look like a bunch of cowboys to me), primarily because it gives me a professional front to the company (telephone answered in company name, decent address), and it enables me to use the business centre for things like client meetings and training sessions. More cost effective than paying for a full time office, helps me project a good image (which is definitely important for my clients, lord help me).
