Some of my subcontractors that are outside of the UK but within Europe like to invoice me quite frequently and my business bank (CA) charges £25 per transaction.

Now before I ask the subcontractors to invoice me less frequently, is there an alternative to sending money via SWIFT that looks ok on the books?

I presume the invoices are in Euros? If so, open a business Euro account with a Eurozone bank. Then you can bulk transfer funds to and from the UK when exchange rates/amounts make it worthwhile.

You might have to visit the bank in person though - most won't entertain the idea of opening an account for a contractor they've never seen in person. A quick business trip to e.g. Dublin might be in order :-)

Transferwise? They have a "business" service, IIRC.
